Sacred Geometry I: The Flower of Life

Sacred Geometry Mandala

There is geometry in the humming of the strings
There is music in the of the spacing of the spheres
– Pythagoras

Sacred geometry may be understood as a worldview of pattern recognition, a complex system of religious symbols and structures involving space, time and form. The belief that God created the universe according to a geometric plan has ancient origins. According to this view the basic patterns of existence are perceived as sacred. By connecting with these, a believer contemplates the great mysteries of the universe.

The Flower of Life (FOL) is one of these geometrical figures. It is composed of multiple evenly-spaced, overlapping circles, that are arranged so that they form a flower-like pattern with a six-fold symmetry like a hexagon. The center of each circle is on the circumference of six surrounding circles of the same diameter. The FOL symbol can be found in nature (flowers, fruits), manuscripts, ancient temples and art around the world.

In this mandala, the concentric energy circle incorporates the mantra and represents protection, good luck, or completion. It links with the spiraling movement of consciousness, sacred geometry, psychology, and healing. Psychoanalyst Carl Jung saw the mandala as “a representation of the unconscious self. The connectedness, the oneness of the Divine Matrix becomes evident s one traces around the circles.

Inspired by the above sentiment, this pastel and pen painting reflects on the power of the word, Waheguru – vwihgurU – pronounced “Wah-hay- guroo”.  Wah means Infinite, hay means Thou, and Guru means Higher Self, or the Divine Teacher within each sentient being.

This is the mantra which has been lovingly handwritten minutely in the painting to portray the omnipresent Divine energy.
